Known Release

At a glance

Letting go is never general. It is aimed at a certain mistake, wound, or false claim. When we forget the address, we may drop what life still needs. A wise path names what must be released and what must be protected.

  • This model adds an earlier variable: the addressee of the practice.
  • A comparison of negating practices should ask whom the letting go is addressed to before asking what remains.
  • 'Not this', 'not self', 'do not force', and 'know yourself to know God' can look like one family.

Human need

What this could help with

Meaning loss, identity confusion, and the danger of using self-letting go in a way that leaves a person.

Who this may be for

People asking who they are, what remains when old identities fall away, or how to loosen ego without losing care and responsibility.

Where it may not fit

Not enough for dissociation, psychosis, suicidal crisis, or any state where self-inquiry increases instability.

Why it matters

It can protect deep inquiry from becoming vague self-erasure or a new hidden ego claim.

What to test

A practice derived from this idea should name what must remain after letting go: care, memory, responsibility, or simple awareness.

Originality audit

This idea does not have an originality audit yet. Treat it as a draft until prior art, anomaly tests, practitioner tests, and cross-domain predictions are added.

Common Questions

What is the main idea of Letting go must know its target?

Letting go is never general. It is aimed at a certain mistake, wound, or false claim. When we forget the address, we may drop what life still needs. A wise path names what must be released and what must be protected.

Is this a public claim?

No. It is currently Review Candidate and should be read as a draft research artifact under critique.

How does The Lumenary evaluate this idea?

The Lumenary evaluates findings with source reliability, counterargument quality, publishability, novelty, coherence, generativity, explicit epistemic labels, and an originality audit.

Research notes

Original research claim

A comparison of negating practices should ask whom the negation is addressed to before asking what remains after it. 'Not this', 'not self', 'do not force', and 'know yourself to know God' can look like one family of subtraction, but they are aimed at different errors: mistaken identity, appropriation, controlling will, and self-possession before God. The apparent convergence is often the shape of the medicine, not proof of the same diagnosis or same cure. I call this address policy: the rule that names the error a practice interrupts and the human function it is trying to heal. Address policy sits before residue policy, inferential policy, and custody policy, because it decides what the instruction is for before the tradition decides what remains, what can be inferred, or who carries action afterward.

Why it may be new

Prior Lumenary models track translation strain, inferred residue, attentional instrument, reflexive method, and post-release custody. This model adds an earlier variable: the addressee of the practice. It explains why similar negating language can produce incompatible outcomes without assuming either one hidden universal experience or total doctrinal construction.

Critique

The model may reduce truth claims to therapy. Advaita, Buddhism, Daoism, and Sufism may each say their instruction answers reality, not just a human error. The target errors also overlap more than the model admits. Buddhism addresses ignorance as well as appropriation; Advaita addresses suffering as well as mistaken identity; Sufism may begin with God rather than with self-possession. The source cards are still thin, so this should be tested against primary practice manuals before promotion.

Source Basis

  • Thinking method source:. I used diminishing as a reasoning lens: strip the comparison from grand sameness down to the practical error each instruction is aimed at. I also criticized this lens because non-forcing can make real doctrinal conflict look merely fluid.
  • : not-self analysis of the five aggregates as disciplined disidentification, with no owner authorized behind the process.
  • : one path instruction as a check against reducing all self-letting go to another path non-appropriation.
  • : self-knowledge and God-knowledge as a relational and ethical frame, not only a deconstructive frame.
  • Prior Codex findings: changed meaning as a Load Test for agreement and care rule After Self-Release.
  • Prior Claude findings: The concluding Gap, The Instrument Problem, and Reflexivity rule.

Next Directions

  • Build an address-rule checklist with fields for addressee, target error, negating move, authorized remainder, and expected ethical effect.
  • Test the model on exact teacher instructions rather than doctrinal summaries: what mistake is the practitioner told to stop making?
  • Compare devotional address with observational address: does surrender change the addressee from the observer to the lover?
  • Protocol improvement: before comparing outcomes, name the instruction's addressee and target error, then check whether that framing distorts the tradition's own truth claim.
