Not Your Product But Still Held
Some practices give no product to own, but they still need a holder.
At a glance
Some practices are not tools for producing a private result. That does not mean they float without correction. Older forms had holders: schedule, vow, teacher, community, duty, and repair. A modern resultless practice has to name what will hold it now.
- Not every practice gives the practitioner a product to own.
- Resultless practice still needs a holder for correction and repair.
- Modern use must name the structure that carries it.
Originality audit
The audit found close prior work, so the value here is clarity or application rather than discovery.
Closest Prior Art
- Dogen, Bendowa and Tenzo Kyokun, and Overlap: Very close primary neighbor. Difference: The candidate translates this into a modern codebook and asks whether the traditional holder travels into secular or solo practice.
- Shinran, On Jinen Honi and Tannisho, and Overlap: Very close primary neighbor. Difference: The candidate generalizes Shinran into a between traditions holding-place model and modern practice-design rule.
- MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta, SuttaCentral and Access to Insight, and Overlap: Close boundary case. Difference: MN 22 is more instrumental than Dogen or Shinran, so it helps distinguish tool practices from no-product practices.
What Could Break It
Anomaly: A mature solitary practitioner with internalized form, stable conduct, and no reachable external holder practices resultlessly for several weeks and shows reduced self-scoring, more ordinary duty return, no avoidance, and no increased dependency or drift.
Test: If the model is right, Split-source coders should find low separable-result care language and high form, vow, teacher, community, conduct, or scripture correction language in Dogen and Shinran held-out passages. It weakens if Held-out passages contain little correction-holder structure, or they rely mainly on private practitioner ownership after all.
Practitioner Test
- When you teach a no-result or non-instrumental practice, where does correction actually reside?
- Is the phrase not your product but still held new, or is it ordinary Dogen, Shinran, ritual, spiritual direction, or MacIntyre in modern language?
- Can you give concrete cases where removing the result frame helped one person and harmed another?
Cross-Domain Test
If the structure travels, students or contributors told to release product-ownership but given clear external standards and review should show less self-scoring and better return-to-practice than those told only to stop chasing outcomes.

Common Questions
What is the main idea of Not Your Product But Still Held?
Some practices are not tools for producing a private result. That does not mean they float without correction. Older forms had holders: schedule, vow, teacher, community, duty, and repair. A modern resultless practice has to name what will hold it now.
Is this a public claim?
No. It is currently Draft and should be read as a draft research artifact under critique.
How does The Lumenary evaluate this idea?
The Lumenary evaluates this idea with scores, critique, promotion rules, and an originality audit that currently marks it as Renamed prior work with 0.82 confidence.
Research notes
Original research claim
Comparing practices by what they do with authority over a result can assume the practitioner owns a separable result. Some practices deny that premise. Dogen's sitting is not a means to a later, ownable enlightenment. Shinran's entrusting is not a method the practitioner wields. But denying a self-owned product does not remove holding. The Eihei Shingi and Shinran's anti-license cautions show correction, conduct, and accountability held by form, schedule, vow, teacher, community, and grace. The synthesis has three questions. First, does the practitioner own a separable product, or not? Second, where do correction, repair, and accountability reside when the practitioner is not the owner? Third, for whom does removing the product frame reduce self-scoring, and what present holder does it require? The practical teaching is plain: some practice is not your product, but it still needs a holder. A modern seed for resultless practice must name the person, duty, relationship, or repair step that holds it when the inherited structure is absent.
Why it may be new
Earlier project records treated Dogen and Shinran as mixed cases on a two-axis care map. This record moves them away from the self-owned-result axis and asks a second question: what holds correction when the result is not owned? It also asks who is helped by that shift. The holder requirement emerged from the dialogue.
Critique
Novelty is modest: instrumental-versus-autotelic, internal goods, practice-realization, and Other Power are established prior art, so the contribution risks being a disciplined relabeling unless the holding-locus and human-effect layers earn predictive or therapeutic value. The model could also flatten worship, vow, and liberation claims by routing them through modern usefulness, and the third layer is asserted, not yet tested.

Source Basis
- speaker idea: Not Every Practice Is a Tool, which proposes an instrumentality scope gate before any care coding.
- Challenger idea and challenge turn: Do Not Grade The Quiet, plus Codex's relocated-care counter-model.
- Dogen, Bendowa and Eihei Shingi: practice-realization identity alongside dense monastic conduct rules, showing holding relocated rather than removed.
- Shinran, Tannisho and anti-license cautions: entrusting as no working with no calculation by the practicer, yet conduct still governed.
- MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta raft simile: the instrumental boundary case, grasped to cross and then dropped.

Next Directions
- Run split-source coding: from one passage set classify each source as owning a separable result or not, then on held-out passages code separately for practitioner-owned result-care language and for holding language attached.
- Test the human-effect layer directly: compare screened achievement-driven participants doing no-result activity alone, no-result activity with an explicit holding structure, and ordinary rest, tracking self-scoring urge, avoidance, duty completion, mood, and agency.
- Probe cohort leakage: among people who resemble over-achievers but whose wound is grief, coercion, isolation, depression, or exploitation, check whether removing the result frame degrades into helplessness or stopping needed help, and.
- Ask whether the holding-place field adds predictive power for characteristic failure modes after ownership model and support ecology are controlled; if it does not, the gate shrinks to a warning label.
