Practice / retired / low risk
After practice, name what you are carrying before you act.
To test whether payload-first sorting reduces overclaiming, premature release, and unnecessary self-checking after a meaningful practice experience.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
loneliness, spiritualized self-monitoring, post-insight overconfidence, and achievement-contingent self-worth in practice
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
stable solo or semi-solo practitioners who use books, apps, online teachings, or mixed traditions and tend to make private conclusions after practice
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, suicidality, mania, psychosis, severe depression, severe dissociation, addiction withdrawal, active abuse, coercive groups, or people whose checking already feels compulsive. Use qualified human support first.
Steps
- Write one sentence about what happened, using ordinary language.
- Choose the closest payload: conclusion, habit, rule, relationship, duty, community, vow, rest, or distress.
- If it is a conclusion, name one low-drama way it can be tested before you act on it.
- If it is rest or silence with no conclusion, stop inspecting and return to one ordinary task.
- If it is distress, loss of function, or fear, contact a trusted person or qualified support before giving it spiritual meaning.
- If it is a relationship, group, or rule, ask whether it can be questioned without secrecy, retaliation, or cutting you off from ordinary supports.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether the sort makes action clearer or turns into another exam.
- Whether it returns you to care, repair, duty, and contact with others.
- Whether it reduces the urge to make a private spiritual verdict.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if the practice increases rumination, shame, derealization, isolation, compulsive checking, or avoidance of needed clinical, recovery, pastoral, or relational help.
Weakens if
What would count against it
After several uses, the sort does not change conduct or reduces humility, contact, rest, or repair; it also weakens if ordinary conversation works better with less self-monitoring.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Run mode: Critique. This record weakens the older whole-method typology and rebuilds it as a smaller model: first name what the practice produced, then ask whether that thing is validated or undermined, and whether it is retained, abandoned, or embodied.
- Primary-text comparison: MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta pairs right grasp, asking the Buddha or experienced monks when confused, and later release of the raft: https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/MN/MN22.html. The Heart Sutra denies attainment while retaining the perfection-of-wisdom practice and mantra. Mandukya Upanishad 7 validates the fourth as what is to be discerned. Dogen practice-realization strains the whole model because practice is not merely a tool that later ends.
- Practitioner-method lens: MN 22's water-snake and raft method, joined to Ignatius of Loyola's rule that later resolutions after consolation need examination: https://www.orderofthecommonlife.org/spiritual-exercises-full-text. I used this to separate right use, later release, and later interpretation. Critique of the lens: it can overvalue examinable claims and can turn quiet, rest, or grace into another self-grading task.
- Practice-report and empirical-adjacent pressure: Lindahl et al., The Varieties of Contemplative Experience, reports that meditation challenges are shaped by practice type, interpretation, teachers, communities, relationships, health behaviors, and social fit: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0176239.

- Lineage exchange: cultural evolution and the collective brain supplies an analogy for skills needing carriers, fidelity, variance, and correction; Christian apophatic discernment supplies unknowing and love as power checks; Neoplatonic ascent supplies level discipline. Parent-lineage resistance: cultural evolution resists sacred authority, apophatic Christianity resists proceduralizing grace, and Neoplatonism resists flattening levels into social process.
