Practice / retired / low risk
After a method seems to confirm a change, name what is actually holding the certainty.
To test whether a felt certainty has a real holder outside the method, or whether the method is being treated as its own witness.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Private certainty and achievement-contingent self-worth after self-guided practice, where a method's own output becomes proof of change.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable self-directed practitioners, app meditators, and self-improvement users who tend to trust a method's verdict about themselves without outside contact.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, dissociation, addiction withdrawal, OCD or scrupulosity loops, trauma activation, unsafe authority, or people whose main need is rest, belonging, or direct clinical care. Not needed for people already in regular contact with a trusted teacher, clinician, or community.
Steps
- Write in one plain sentence what the method seems to have confirmed about you.
- Ask where that certainty is actually held: a trusted person, a tested text, a community, a vow, your conduct over time, or only the method itself.
- If you can name a holder outside the method, name one small way to bring the claim to it within a week.
- If the only holder is the method, write that plainly and hold the claim lightly for now.
- Choose one ordinary act that does not depend on the verdict being true: rest, a duty, a repair, a message to someone you trust.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether you can name a real holder or only the method.
- Whether the claim becomes humbler when no outside holder can be named.
- Whether seeking a holder feels like relief or like exposure.
- Whether the check becomes another private scoreboard.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if this increases compulsive checking, shame, dependence on an unsafe authority, or fear of your own practice. It is not a substitute for therapy, medical care, or human support.
Weakens if
What would count against it
Weakens if naming the holder produces more rumination than honest contact, if ordinary conversation works as well, or if users cannot distinguish a real external holder from another internal verdict.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Active frontier: what a method does with its own authority. This run contradicts the frontier's framing and its proposed two-axis rebuild rather than extending it.
- Primary-text comparison: Mandukya Upanishad verse 7, where turiya is the Self to be known, set against MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta, where the Dhamma is a raft validated by the crossing and then released. The comparison shows that in neither case does the method's own operation certify the result: the Mandukya treats the Self as already given and only removes what is not-Self, while MN 22 borrows validation from the fruit of crossing.
- Further cases where authority sits outside the method: Heart Sutra negates attainment while still relying on Prajnaparamita as practice and community; Tannisho relocates the decisive power to Amida's vow.
- Practitioner-method lens: neti-neti negation, used to subtract the assumption that the method is the locus of authority. Critique of the lens: subtraction can hide Dogen's practice-realization, where method and validation may not be two, so it was checked against Bendowa and against Advaita self-luminosity.
