Practice / retired / medium risk

Before a strong practice session, choose one thing that may correct your interpretation afterward.

Test whether pre-existing correction reduces private verdict urgency after quiet, no-self, or unusually calm states.

Human problem

What this is for

loneliness, spiritual isolation, private certainty, post-practice anxiety, and meaning loss after unusual practice states

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

stable self-directed practitioners who practice mostly alone and tend to interpret strong inner states without trusted feedback

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidality, psychosis, mania, severe depression, severe dissociation, derealization, trauma flooding, addiction withdrawal, OCD or scrupulosity without appropriate care, active abuse, unsafe authority situations, or people using practice to avoid therapy, medical care, recovery support, or ordinary responsibility.

Steps

  1. Before practice, write one safe correction channel: a trusted person, teacher instruction, clinical plan, ordinary duty, source passage, body limit, or conduct test.
  2. Write one sentence: This experience cannot by itself decide who I am or what others owe me.
  3. Practice normally. Do not add analysis during the practice.
  4. Afterward, wait at least 30 minutes before interpreting the state. Do one ordinary act of care or responsibility first.
  5. If the experience still feels important, compare your interpretation with the prior channel. Contact the person only if that was already agreed and safe.
  6. Record whether verdict urgency, loneliness, shame, reassurance seeking, or ordinary conduct changed.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether the prior channel feels supportive, controlling, irrelevant, or easy for the current state to dismiss.
  • Whether the state tries to replace the prior channel as judge.
  • Whether you become more connected to ordinary care or more trapped in checking.
  • Whether you are more willing to wait before making identity claims.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if the practice increases panic, derealization, compulsive checking, shame, dependency, unsafe disclosure, self-harm thoughts, manic certainty, or pressure to obey an unsafe person. Use appropriate clinical, emergency, recovery, or trusted human support when needed.

Weakens if

What would count against it

Weakens if ordinary rest, private journaling, or one trusted conversation performs as well or better; if the practice increases checking, dependency, or shame; or if qualified practitioners report that the prior-channel step distorts their path.

Practice report

Tell us what happened

Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. Frontier: Where freed attention is allowed to rest. This record narrows the frontier by moving from post-release resting place to pre-release support.
  • Attribution: Codex generated this critique record from the supplied Codex and Claude project memory. Claude-side pressure enters through existing records such as A Self-Audit Is Not a Second Witness and the active lineage exchange brief.
  • Thinking method source: Udana 1.10 Bahiya, https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/KN/Ud/ud1_10.html. I used no-location as a reasoning lens: do not invent an owner or resting place when the source refuses one. Critique of the lens: it can erase traditions that protect an unobjectifiable knower or rely on teacher transmission, so it was balanced with Advaita, Mahamudra, Dzogchen, Neoplatonic, and apophatic sources.
  • Primary comparison: Bahiya is corrected by a devata, seeks the Buddha, receives no-location instruction, and is later confirmed by the Buddha. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 names the unseen seer and inner ruler, https://sacred-texts.com/hin/sbe15/sbe15070.htm. The comparison shows that the post-self move may refuse landing or protect an unobjectifiable knower, but both are taught inside an authority relation.
  • Primary comparison: Tilopa's Ganges Mahamudra gives no object, no abiding, and naked awareness while also telling the practitioner to rely on a wise guru, https://www.lotsawahouse.org/indian-masters/tilopa/ganges-mahamudra-instruction. Patrul Rinpoche's Dzogchen root text emphasizes recognition, confidence, and stability, https://www.lotsawahouse.org/tibetan-masters/patrul-rinpoche/tsik-sum-nedek-root.
  • Primary comparison: Pseudo-Dionysius, Mystical Theology, moves beyond perception, intellect, affirmation, and negation while retaining prayer, ascent, and initiatory context, https://www.tertullian.org/fathers/areopagite_06_mystic_theology.htm.
  • Neoplatonic lineage source: Plotinus Enneads source card on return and participation. It resists a flat no-ground account because ascent preserves levels before union, so final simplicity is carried by a disciplined path.
  • Closest prior argument: SEP Mysticism on common-core, perennialist, constructivist, Stace, Smart, Zaehner, Forman, and Katz debates, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/mysticism/. Difference: this record does not decide whether the experience is common or constructed. It asks whether a corrective channel was authorized before the self-loosening state and whether the current state can edit it.
  • Empirical-adjacent source: Lindahl et al. 2017, Varieties of Contemplative Experience, https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0176239. Similar meditation experiences can be interpreted and managed differently, with influencing factors including practitioner, practice, relationships, and health behaviors.
  • Modern human-condition source: U.S. Surgeon General 2023 social connection advisory, https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf. Loneliness and isolation ground the target cohort: isolated self-directed seekers who may lack durable correction and belonging.
  • Cultural evolution lens: Muthukrishna and Henrich, Innovation in the Collective Brain source card. Used analogically as a design constraint: complex skills survive through networks with fidelity, variation, and correction. This is not spiritual proof.
  • Internal near-neighbor pressure: Custody Policy After Self-Release, Quiet Needs a Return Path, Leave One Door Open, and A Self-Audit Is Not a Second Witness lower novelty and push this record to narrow rather than repeat the correction cluster.
