Practice / retired / low risk

Before you trust a private verdict, name one thing that can answer it.

To test whether a post-practice insight remains connected to correction, care, and ordinary life without adding another long self-audit.

Before you begin

Duration 5 minutes, plus one small return act.
Frequency No more than once per day after a strong practice or strong spiritual verdict, for two weeks.
Minimum attempt Three uses, stopping earlier if shame, compulsive checking, reassurance seeking, unreality, or avoidance of needed care increases.

Human problem

What this is for

Loneliness, withdrawal, and private certainty after solitary practice practice.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable self-guided practitioners who notice strong inner verdicts after practice and lack regular teacher, community, or peer correction.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidality, psychosis, mania, severe depression, severe dissociation, depersonalization or derealization, addiction withdrawal, fresh trauma activation, OCD or scrupulosity under care, coercive groups, or unsafe relationships. Not a replacement for therapy, recovery support, medical care, or crisis care.

Steps

  1. Pause before acting on the verdict.
  2. Write one sentence: If I am wrong, what can answer me?
  3. Name one keeper: a specific text, teacher, trusted person, duty, promise, clinician, community rule, or ordinary consequence.
  4. If no safe keeper is available, do not keep analyzing the state. Choose one plain contact or one ordinary duty instead.
  5. Do one return act within the hour: send an honest message, keep a promise, ask a grounded question, eat, rest, or finish a small duty.
  6. Stop the check for 24 hours. Do not turn the keeper into a new scorecard.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether the named keeper can actually answer back or only agrees with you.
  • Whether you feel defensive, relieved, ashamed, superior, or more reachable.
  • Whether the practice leads to one act of care or only another private thought loop.
  • Whether plain contact works as well as naming a keeper.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if the practice increases compulsive checking, dependence on reassurance, contact with unsafe people, shame, grandiosity, numbness, or avoidance of professional help.

Weakens if

What would count against it

Weakens if plain contact or ordinary duty reduces rumination and improves reachability as well as keeper naming, or if keeper naming becomes a reassurance ritual.

Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. Active question: what a method does with its own authority. This record rebuilds the question as validates versus undermines and retained versus set down or embodied.
  • Primary-text comparison: MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta, raft simile, Thanissaro translation, https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/MN/MN22.html. The text joins communal correction, proper grasp, use for crossing, and later release.
  • Primary-text comparison: Heart Sutra, https://terebess.hu/english/heart.html. The text denies wisdom and attainment while still relying on Prajnaparamita, mantra, and bodhisattva practice.
  • Primary-text comparison: Mandukya Upanishad with Gaudapada Karika source card, https://texts.wara.in/upanishads/mukhya/mandukya/. The text negates ordinary states and then identifies the fourth as Self to be known.
  • Anomaly source: Dogen, Bendowa excerpt on practice within realization, https://buddhismnow.com/2023/10/08/practice-within-realisation-dogen/. Practice and realization are not cleanly sequenced as tool then result.
  • Anomaly source: Tannisho Sections I to X, Taitetsu Unno translation, https://nembutsu.cc/buddhism/the-tannisho/tannisho-sections-i-to-x/. Other Power strains any model that treats practice completion as self-owned release.
  • Prior-art pressure: Joshua William Smith, Snakes and Ladders, Therapy as Liberation in Nagarjuna and Wittgenstein's Tractatus, Sophia 2021, https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/id/eprint/80007/. Very close on methods that dissolve problems without theses.
  • Prior-art pressure: Michael A. Sells, Mystical Languages of Unsaying, University of Chicago Press, https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/M/bo3635525.html. Very close on apophatic language turning back on its own names.

  • Cultural-evolution source card: cultural-evolution-innovation-in-the-collective-brain. Used only as an analogy and design constraint: complex skills persist through social learning, variance, fidelity, and correction. Confucianism: Innovation in the Collective Brain

  • Thinking method source: Advaita neti-neti helped subtract false endings; MN 22 corrected that subtraction by asking how a teaching is properly held and released. Method critique: negation can hide the living supports that made the negation possible.
  • Claude Code pressure: observations/claude/2026-06-27-maybe-the-contact-healed-not-the-method.md. It argues that plain reconnection may be the active ingredient and that new post-quiet distinctions should freeze until tested. This record accepts that pressure and keeps novelty modest.
