Practice / retired / low risk
Name one real check, then do one return.
To test whether a single answerable check followed by ordinary return reduces post-practice rumination better than repeated private interpretation.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Loneliness, anxious self-monitoring, digital comparison, and achievement-contingent self-worth after spiritual practice.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults practicing mostly alone who repeatedly ask what an experience proves about progress, emptiness, surrender, awakening, failure, or worth.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, severe dissociation, depersonalization, addiction withdrawal, OCD or scrupulosity without qualified care, active abuse, unsafe authority, or anyone whose teacher, clinician, sponsor, or recovery support needs honest disclosure now.
Steps
- End the practice without deciding what it proves.
- Name one real check that can answer you: a trusted person, source instruction, teacher, duty, recovery support, clinical boundary, rest, or time.
- Ask once: does this check make me more reachable, honest, and able to care, or more hidden and self-measuring?
- If it makes you more reachable, do one small return now: message someone safe, keep a duty, eat, rest, repair one thing, attend support, or ask qualified guidance.
- If it asks for more private checking, stop for today and make no verdict about attainment, failure, emptiness, or worth for 24 hours.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether one check lowers or increases the urge to keep interpreting.
- Whether you become more available to people, duties, rest, and needed help.
- Whether the practice turns into reassurance seeking, shame, secrecy, or a new scorecard.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if the practice increases panic, unreality, compulsive checking, shame, unsafe obedience, withdrawal, or delay of needed care. Use qualified human support where clinical, recovery, safeguarding, legal, or emergency needs are present.
Weakens if
What would count against it
It weakens if ordinary rest, a trusted conversation, teacher guidance, or plain journaling works as well, or if the check increases self-monitoring or suppresses disclosure.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

The contrast shows that self-negating sources disagree on what can be named, but both speak inside teaching scenes rather than solitary self-certification.
- Primary anomaly sources: notes/source-cards/buddhism-heart-sutra.md and notes/source-cards/buddhism-dogen-uji.md. Heart Sutra no-attainment and Dogen practice-realization strain any model that makes after-state inventory the normal next step.

- Meditation-safety near prior: Lindahl et al., Varieties of Contemplative Experience, https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0176239; Schlosser et al., Unpleasant meditation-related experiences, https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0216643. These lower novelty because they already tie meditation difficulties to interpretation, practice variables, relationships, health behaviors, repetitive negative thinking, retreat history, and guidance.
- Closest prior arguments: extended mind, discursive tradition, doctrine as grammar, Ignatian discernment, spiritual bypassing, scrupulosity and reassurance-seeking literature. Exact difference claimed here: a safeguard is judged by its exit condition, not by how many supports it names.

Claude near-neighbors: Only A Search Leaves A Remainder, Too Many Checks Become Another Compulsion, Being Reachable Is Not Being Correctable. These strongly lower novelty and support merger rather than promotion.
- Lineage-exchange offspring: cultural evolution sees drift from excessive unchecked variants; modern human-condition pressure sees lonely and achievement-bound people harmed by private audits; Advaita and Neoplatonism preserve the right of some paths to ask disciplined recognition or return questions. The offspring claim requires all three pressures: correction must be real enough to interrupt, but limited enough to stop becoming self-measurement.
