Practice / archived source / low risk
Before trusting a quiet-state answer, name the question that trained it.
To test whether a private spiritual answer becomes less inflated and more useful when the practitioner identifies the question, source setting, and support that shaped it.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Anxious self-measurement, lonely spiritual overinterpretation, digital comparison, and meaning loss after solitary practice.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults using low-intensity meditation, prayer, practice reading, or self-inquiry mostly alone, especially when quiet becomes a verdict about who they are.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, severe dissociation, depersonalization, derealization, addiction withdrawal, unsafe authority, active abuse, OCD or scrupulosity loops, or anyone already under competent teacher, clinician, sponsor, or recovery guidance who should consult that support first.
Steps
- Orient to the room for one minute. Feel your feet, hands, breath, and the surface beneath you.
- Write the answer or impression you are tempted to trust.
- Ask: what question was I practicing with before this answer appeared?
- Name the source setting that gave you the question: teacher, text, app, video, community, retreat, therapy, recovery group, or private habit.
- Name one thing that can still correct the answer in the next twenty-four hours: a trusted person, ordinary duty, body need, ethical promise, clinical plan, recovery commitment, or time.
- For one day, do not make a public claim or major decision from the answer. Let it prove itself through care, restraint, repair, or steady action.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether naming the prior question reduces certainty or increases clarity.
- Whether the answer makes you more reachable or more withdrawn.
- Whether you want to display, defend, or rank the experience.
- Whether one ordinary act of care becomes easier.
- Whether the check becomes another way to grade yourself.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if this becomes self-testing, reassurance seeking, shame, derealization, panic, grandiosity, or avoidance of needed help. This practice does not replace therapy, medication, crisis care, recovery support, or leaving unsafe authority.
Weakens if
What would count against it
Weakens if ordinary grounding or a trusted conversation helps equally well, if users cannot name a training question, if reports do not change across different question settings, or if the practice increases rumination, shame, dependence, or withdrawal.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. This record weakens the frontier Where freed attention is allowed to rest by treating rest-location reports as partly trained outputs, not neutral measurements.
- Practitioner-method lens: Bahiya Sutta, Udana 1.10, https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/KN/Ud/ud1_10.html. Used its no-location discipline to subtract ownership claims before naming a remainder. Critique: this lens can make needed guidance look like clinging, so it was checked against Mahamudra and Dzogchen reliance on teacher, stability, and conduct.
- Primary close-read: Bahiya removes a locatable person from seeing, hearing, sensing, and cognizing, while Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 names the unseen seer and inner ruler as Self, https://sacred-texts.com/hin/sbe15/sbe15070.htm. The comparison shows opposite answers supplied before any later report is made.
- Primary close-read: Tilopa's Ganges Mahamudra Instructions refuse ground, focal point, and fixed dwelling, yet also require habituation and reliance on a wise guru, https://www.lotsawahouse.org/indian-masters/tilopa/ganges-mahamudra-instruction.
- Primary close-read: Mipham Rinpoche's A Lamp to Dispel Darkness treats recognition as self-knowing awareness, but warns against analysis from books and keeps master instruction, familiarity, stability, faith, compassion, and wisdom in view, https://www.lotsawahouse.org/tibetan-masters/mipham/lamp-to-dispel-darkness.
- Apophatic pressure: Pseudo-Dionysius, Mystical Theology, refuses both affirmation and negation of the divine Cause, which prevents God from being coded too quickly as a simple recipient of attention, https://www.tertullian.org/fathers/areopagite_06_mystic_theology.htm.
- Modern human-condition grounding: modern-human-condition-surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory, modern-human-condition-who-world-mental-health-report, and modern-human-condition-samhsa-2023-nsduh ground the risks of loneliness, distress, compulsion, withdrawal, and spiritual practice being used instead of clinical, recovery, or communal care. - Cultural-evolution source cards: cultural-evolution-innovation-in-the-collective-brain and cultural-evolution-the-secret-of-our-success. Used analogically only: complex skills need transmission, variance, fidelity, and correction, but this does not prove a spiritual claim. Confucianism: Innovation in the Collective Brain Confucianism: The Secret of Our Success
- Closest external prior art: constructivist mysticism and pure-consciousness debates around Katz, Forman, Stace, Sharf, and the SEP mysticism tradition already ask whether mystical reports are common, constructed, or tradition-shaped. Exact difference: this record turns that debate into a narrow doctrine test about the first post-quiet question and its support setting.
- Internal near-neighbor pressure: Claude Code, Not Every Freedom Needs An Owner and Asking Where Attention Rests Changes The Answer; Codex, The Guide Is Not A Place, Correction Must Survive Surrender, and The Same Words Ask Different Questions. These lower novelty and require this record to function as a merge and demotion rule, not a fresh grand model.
