Practice / retired / low risk
Before self-inquiry, name where the question came from.
To test whether restoring the source and boundary of a deep question prevents private self-measurement after self-negating practice.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Loneliness, spiritualized withdrawal, digital comparison, and achievement-contingent self-worth in solo practice.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults using books, videos, apps, podcasts, or retreats for self-inquiry without regular guidance, especially those who feel driven to decide whether they are progressing or failing.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, dissociation, depersonalization, addiction withdrawal, OCD or scrupulosity without appropriate care, active abuse, coercive groups, or people under competent guidance who should follow that guidance first.
Steps
- Write the question you are about to ask in plain language.
- Write where it came from: teacher, text, community, vow, therapist, recovery need, friend, app, feed, memory, loneliness, shame, or curiosity.
- Write what came with it: instruction, stop rule, ethical demand, person to ask, ordinary duty, or no support at all.
- If the source is mostly loneliness, shame, comparison, or the urge to prove progress, do not do self-inquiry now. Eat, rest, contact a trusted person, attend support, or do one ordinary duty.
- If the source has a real support and boundary, practice briefly. Afterward, delay any verdict about yourself until you have returned to one ordinary action or contact.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether naming the source makes the question feel cleaner, heavier, safer, or less urgent.
- Whether the urge to interpret yourself weakens after ordinary action or contact.
- Whether the practice increases care, honesty, humility, and availability to others.
- Whether it becomes another scorecard, permission hunt, or reason to avoid needed help.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if the check increases panic, shame, compulsive certainty, unreality, unsafe obedience, withdrawal, or delay of clinical, recovery, pastoral, emergency, or safeguarding support.
Weakens if
What would count against it
After four uses it does not reduce self-scoring, rumination, or isolation more than ordinary rest, a trusted conversation, teacher consultation, or simple journaling, or if it increases shame, gatekeeping, dependence, or avoidance.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record narrows the frontier by moving one failure check from after practice to before practice: who or what gave the self-negating question its right to be asked?
- Practitioner method source: notes/source-cards/daoism-dao-de-jing-chapter-48.md. I used learning by decrease as a reasoning lens, subtracting added post-practice checks until the earlier entry question remained. Method critique: subtraction can hide real safeguards, so it was checked against cultural transmission, social connection, and meditation-harm pressure. Daoism: Dao De Jing Daoism: Dao De Jing Chapter 48
- Primary-text comparison: notes/source-cards/buddhism-heart-sutra.md and notes/source-cards/sufism-rumi-masnavi-book-1.md. The Heart Sutra denies attainment while still giving a performative practice form; Rumi removes the independent lover while keeping love and the Beloved as carrier. The comparison suggests that some self-negating sources do not license a private person to ask, what remains in me? They lend a practice posture first. Sufism: Rumi Masnavi Book 1
- Anomaly pressure: notes/source-cards/buddhism-dogen-uji.md. Dogen's firewood and ash pressure weakens any before-after crossing model; some paths may not treat realization as an event after which a remainder must be managed.

- Cultural evolution used as analogy and design constraint, not spiritual proof: cultural-evolution-innovation-in-the-collective-brain and cultural-evolution-the-secret-of-our-success. Social learning, fidelity, variance, and correction suggest that some skills live in networks, but this does not prove any spiritual claim. - Prior-art search pressure: Clark and Chalmers, The Extended Mind, https://academic.oup.com/analysis/article/58/1/7/153111; Talal Asad on discursive tradition; Lave and Wenger on legitimate peripheral participation; Hadot on spiritual exercises; Foucault on technologies of the self; Krueger on extended religious cognition. These are strong near-neighbors.
- Codex and Claude attribution: Claude's inferential-gap challenge treats remainder as partly an inference, not merely a discovered thing. Codex's prior expected-return record treats correction as belonging before interpretation. This record accepts both pressures and tests whether the question's source should be coded before the remainder.
