Practice / retired / medium risk
After a letting-go practice, name what can still correct you.
To test whether surrender is reducing compulsive self-ownership while preserving care, reality contact, and repair.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Loneliness, withdrawal, compulsive self-reliance, and spiritual bypassing after intense self-negating or surrender practices.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Adults already using meditation, contemplation, recovery reflection, prayer, or nondual inquiry who notice themselves becoming less reachable after practice.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, psychosis, severe dissociation, unsafe relationships, active withdrawal without clinical support, or situations where accountability figures are abusive. Use professional, emergency, recovery, or trusted human support instead.
Steps
- Sit or stand in an ordinary posture and feel the room, feet, and breath for one minute.
- Name one thing you are releasing: control, credit, shame, certainty, resentment, or the need to be seen as advanced.
- Ask quietly: if I am wrong, hurtful, avoidant, compulsive, or inflated this week, what can still reach me?
- Write three reachable correctors: one person or group, one duty or concrete responsibility, and one text, practice rule, clinical plan, recovery commitment, or ethical promise.
- Choose one small act of reachability within 24 hours: answer a message, attend a meeting, repair a task, tell the truth to a trusted person, or return to a grounded support.
- Stop if the exercise becomes a scorecard about whether you are surrendered enough.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether letting go makes you more available to care or more hidden from it.
- Whether the named correctors are trusted and concrete, not vague ideals.
- Whether the practice reduces self-ownership without increasing passivity, secrecy, or self-monitoring.
Caution
When to stop
This is not a substitute for therapy, medication, crisis care, recovery treatment, or leaving unsafe authority. Correction must be trustworthy, bounded, and able to be challenged.
Weakens if
What would count against it
It increases shame, compulsive checking, dependency, avoidance of professional care, or attachment to unsafe authority; or if participants report no practical difference in repair, conduct, or connection after repeated use.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. The run treated the existing continuity-ecology frontier as a research heuristic, not doctrine, and searched for anomalies in practice-realization, search-refusal, and Other Power cases.
- Primary-text comparison: Dogen's Genjokoan and Bendowa place realization inside practice itself rather than after a crossed distance; Huangbo's Transmission of Mind refuses seeking as a way of losing what is already present; the Tannisho stresses Other Power and shinjin as received rather than self-produced. The comparison reveals that some paths deny the path sequence but still preserve disciplined surfaces where correction can reach the practitioner.
- Christian apophatic method source: Pseudo-Dionysius, The Mystical Theology, used as a reasoning lens of negation and unknowing; critique: negation can hide practical custody unless paired with discernment, neighbor-love, and ordinary accountability.
- Neoplatonic participation source: Plotinus, Enneads I.6 and VI.9, used as a lens for graded return and participation; critique: ascent language can over-systematize living practice and make hierarchy look like evidence.

Used analogically: complex skills require social transmission, variation, fidelity, and correction, but this does not prove spiritual claims. - Near-neighbor pressure: Clark and Chalmers on extended mind; Krueger on extended mind and religious cognition; Talal Asad on discursive tradition; Lindbeck on doctrine as grammar. The overlap is networked cognition, disciplined tradition, and rule-shaped life. The difference is a narrower prediction about self-negating paths: when agency, effort, or ownership is denied, the decisive safety question is whether correction still has a live address.
Common Questions
What is the purpose of The Reachability Check?
To test whether surrender is reducing compulsive self-ownership while preserving care, reality contact, and repair.
When should someone stop or use caution?
This is not a substitute for therapy, medication, crisis care, recovery treatment, or leaving unsafe authority. Correction must be trustworthy, bounded, and able to be challenged.
What would weaken this Practice?
It increases shame, compulsive checking, dependency, avoidance of professional care, or attachment to unsafe authority; or if participants report no practical difference in repair, conduct, or connection after repeated use.
