Practice / retired / low risk

Before an intense solitary practice, check whether you are formed to hold it, and be willing to start lower.

To test whether choosing formation before depth, rather than choosing depth plus an emergency contact, reduces destabilization and private certainty after solitary self-loosening practice.

Before you begin

Duration 10 minutes before a planned intense session, plus a short note after.
Frequency Only before sessions intended to loosen self-story or go unusually deep, not before ordinary practice.
Minimum attempt Use it before four intense sessions over a month before judging it.

Human problem

What this is for

Destabilization, withdrawal, and over-certain self-verdicts after intense solitary practice attempted without prior formation; spiritual isolation in self-guided seekers.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable adults practicing mostly alone who feel pulled toward deep, self-emptying, or deconstructive practice and tend to skip foundations.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for people already in a formed lineage with an active teacher, where the readiness question is largely answered. Not for acute crisis, suicidality, psychosis, mania, severe depression, severe dissociation or derealization, trauma flooding, addiction withdrawal, or OCD and scrupulosity without qualified care; those need human and clinical help, not a self-administered check. Not a tool for deciding that a person is unworthy of practice; its only verdict is start lower or proceed.

Steps

  1. Name the practice you are about to do and what it is meant to loosen.
  2. Ask four formation questions: Have I kept ordinary conduct and duties steady lately? Have I built up to this depth gradually, or am I jumping? Do I have instruction I can remember and follow without a teacher present? Have I done this depth before without becoming unreachable or over-certain?
  3. If you can honestly answer yes to most, proceed, and keep the session within your prior depth.
  4. If not, choose formation instead: do a shorter or shallower version, keep one ordinary duty or relationship active this week, and plan to grow into the deeper practice over time.
  5. Afterward, write one line: did the experience make me more reachable and more careful, or more sealed and more certain?

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether honest answers point to start lower more often than you expected.
  • Whether choosing formation feels like relief, shame, or avoidance.
  • Whether sessions kept within prior depth leave you more reachable than sessions that jumped.
  • Whether the check becomes a new way to grade or disqualify yourself.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if the check becomes self-punishing, increases shame, or is used to avoid practice entirely. It is not a clinical screen and not a substitute for therapy, recovery support, medical care, or a qualified teacher. If you are in crisis, seek human and clinical help rather than running this check.

Weakens if

What would count against it

Weakens if naming an emergency contact afterward protects people as well as starting lower does; if formation cannot be honestly self-assessed; if the check mainly produces shame or stalling; or if ordinary graduated practice without the check performs the same.

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Where freed attention is allowed to rest. This record does not extend the correction-channel cluster; it tries to weaken and consolidate it by relocating its main variable.
  • Internal near-neighbor cluster being challenged: Leave One Door Open, Quiet Still Needs A Door, No Place Is Not No Care, Build The Door Before The Quiet, The Road Must Hold You First, Correction Needs A Non-Editable Carrier, The Refuser Is Part Of The Medicine. These records share one claim coded several ways: a self-loosening experience is safer when an external correction channel is present, pre-existing, and not editable by the current state.
  • Observation that prompted the critique: in roughly one month this frontier produced at least seven structurally similar records, each adding a sub-distinction (timing, editability, refusal capacity, risk-scaling, refuser-reachability) that none of them has tested. The system's own next_directions repeatedly say do not publish as standalone and run the blind distinct-decision review. Per the standing protocol: treat repeated renaming of an unrun test as saturation.
  • Thinking-method source: Udana 1.10 Bahiya (no-location lens), https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/KN/Ud/ud1_10.html. I used no-location to strip premature owner language, then criticized it: the cluster used the same lens and kept tripping on Bahiya as its strongest anomaly without resolving it, which suggested the lens was hiding the real variable. I paired it with a formation lens drawn from monastic pedagogy.
  • Primary text comparison 1: John Cassian, Institutes and Conferences (esp. Conf. 19 on the cenobitic and anchoritic lives), https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/350819.htm. Cassian holds that long cenobitic formation must precede anchoritic solitude, because deeper silence does not remove unattended passions; it surfaces them. The hermit deliberately reduces external correction channels, and the tradition treats this as appropriate only after formation.
  • Primary text comparison 2: Visuddhimagga, ordering of sila, samadhi, panna, and the dhutanga forest-dwelling chapter, https://www.wisdomlib.org/buddhism/book/visuddhimagga-the-pah-of-purification/d/doc1085018.html. Forest dwelling presupposes established virtue and concentration, and a kammatthana is matched by a kalyana-mitta to temperament. Solitary intensity is staged after formation, not protected by an afterward-reachable corrector.
  • Empirical-adjacent source: Lindahl, Britton et al., Varieties of Contemplative Experience, PLOS One 2017, https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0176239. The taxonomy lists 26 influencing factors across practitioner, practice, relationship, and health domains, including practitioner-level factors such as prior practice and prior psychiatric history. It lists these factors without ranking prior formation against current social-correction reachability, which is the test this record asks for.
  • Modern human-condition source: U.S. Surgeon General 2023 social connection advisory, https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf. Grounds the cohort and flags a risk in the cluster's own remedy: telling isolated people their safety depends on reaching someone afterward can shame the lonely and miss that the real gap is upstream.
  • Cross-tradition pressure retained from the cluster: Dzogchen and Mahamudra direct-recognition texts, where teachers say recognition and confidence already carry correction. This is treated here as evidence that internalized formation, not live external reachability, is the operative protection.

Common Questions

What is the purpose of The Readiness Check Before Depth?

To test whether choosing formation before depth, rather than choosing depth plus an emergency contact, reduces destabilization and private certainty after solitary self-loosening practice.

When should someone stop or use caution?

Stop if the check becomes self-punishing, increases shame, or is used to avoid practice entirely. It is not a clinical screen and not a substitute for therapy, recovery support, medical care, or a qualified teacher. If you are in crisis, seek human and clinical help rather than running this check.

What would weaken this Practice?

Weakens if naming an emergency contact afterward protects people as well as starting lower does; if formation cannot be honestly self-assessed; if the check mainly produces shame or stalling; or if ordinary graduated practice without the check performs the same.
