Practice / under dialogue / low risk

After a quiet state, name the place you are rushing to belong.

To notice whether loosened attention is being re-housed into a new identity, authority, or self-image, and to let that urge be seen rather than obeyed.

Before you begin

Duration 5 minutes
Frequency Only after a notably quiet, open, or self-loosening state, no more than twice per week.
Minimum attempt Use it after three separate states before judging whether it helps; stop earlier if it increases unreality, fear, or floating.

Human problem

What this is for

Post-state rehoming of attention into spiritual identity, belonging, or attainment claims, with self-worth tied to being someone now.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable adults who meditate, pray, self-inquire, or return from retreat and notice an urge to claim a new identity, teacher, or doctrine after a quiet or open state.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, dissociation or persistent depersonalization, addiction withdrawal, fresh trauma activation, or anyone whose loosening already feels like frightening unreality or floating; those need grounding, contact, and care first, not homelessness language. Not for people under a trusted teacher who has given different instructions.

Steps

  1. Sit normally for one minute. Do not try to deepen or hold the state.
  2. Write one plain sentence: right now I feel pulled to belong to ____ (an identity, a teacher, a doctrine, the idea that I am awakened, or nothing).
  3. Ask: is this pull the old self looking for a new address?
  4. Do not force homelessness and do not force a home. Just let the pull be named and unobeyed for today.
  5. Choose one ordinary act of contact or duty: a message, a meal, a task, a walk, or rest. Return to it before deciding what the state meant.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether the urge to claim a new identity loosens when it is named.
  • Whether the state stays meaningful without being turned into proof or status.
  • Whether you become more reachable by people and duties or more sealed off.
  • Whether the check itself becomes a new thing to perform.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if this increases unreality, floating, panic, shame, or fear of your own mind. It is not a substitute for grounding, therapy, medical care, or a trusted teacher. If loosening feels destabilizing, seek grounding and human contact first.

Weakens if

What would count against it

It weakens if ordinary rest or one trusted conversation works as well, if users cannot tell the rehoming urge from ordinary craving, or if it makes people avoid grounding, contact, or responsibility.

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. The active frontier asks where freed attention may rest. This run weakens the custody framing by showing that its first question, to whom does attention belong, is malformed for non-abiding traditions.
  • Primary-text comparison: Udana 1.10 (Bahiya Sutta) removes the person from the sense fields without affirming any positive quality or resting place; Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 affirms a positive unseen knower and makes it the Self, a resting place held as identity; Tilopa's Ganges Mahamudra instructions affirm a positive luminous self-knowing while saying mind has no support and does not abide, and require the guru; Pseudo-Dionysius, Mystical Theology, places the divine Cause beyond both affirmation and negation, refusing the resting question itself.
  • Practitioner-method lens: Mahamudra non-abiding recognition, used as a reasoning lens by withholding the assumption that loosened attention must be re-housed. Critique of the lens: non-abiding language can make ordinary grounding, contact, and duty look like grasping, so it was corrected by Bahiya-style subtraction and by trauma-informed grounding for destabilized states.
  • Divergence from Codex, Rest Where Correction Can Reach (2026-06-04), which narrowed the same anomaly to correction-reachability. This record instead narrows it to a prior question: does the path permit attention to belong anywhere at all.
  • Near-neighbor pressure: apratisthita and non-abiding teachings in the Heart Sutra and Diamond Sutra; the custody model of unclaimed attention; modern human-condition source on achievement-contingent self-worth and digital comparison.
