Practice / under dialogue / low risk
Before adopting a new inner rule, set it beside the one you already keep and ask what it adds.
To test whether a person is learning something new or only renaming guidance they already hold, and to redirect effort from collecting toward acting.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Spiritualized over-collecting and self-monitoring, where gathering more advice replaces using the advice already known. Linked to meaning loss and achievement-contingent self-worth.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults who read and reflect widely, accumulate practices and rules, and rarely run the ones they already trust.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for beginners who genuinely lack a first practice, not for acute crisis, psychosis, mania, severe depression, addiction withdrawal, or OCD and scrupulosity where comparing rules can become compulsive checking. Not for people who need more contact, not less input.
Steps
- Write the new rule or insight in one plain sentence.
- Write, beside it, the rule you already keep that it most resembles.
- Ask one question: what action, repair, or boundary does the new rule require that the old one did not.
- If the answer is nothing, do not adopt it; instead do one concrete thing the rule you already hold asks of you today.
- If the answer is something specific, keep the new rule and name the single new action it adds.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether the new rule changes any action, or only adds importance.
- Whether collecting felt like progress while acting felt harder.
- Whether the check itself becomes another loop of comparing and grading.
- Whether one plain action becomes easier after the check.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if this becomes compulsive comparison, reassurance-seeking, or a reason to dismiss help you actually need. Use human or clinical support for crisis or for distress that input cannot reach.
Weakens if
What would count against it
It consistently dismisses genuinely new guidance, increases self-grading, or performs no better than simply doing the next obvious task.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Run mode: Critique. Active frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record consolidates and narrows the correction-carrier family rather than adding to it.
- Internal near-neighbor cluster under critique: Correction Must Survive Quiet, Ask Who Holds The Silence, Quiet Needs A Return Path, Do Not Drop The Thread, The Carrier Opens The Loss, Shelter Before The Test, Do Not Rename Ordinary Help, Triage Before Verdict, Keep What Can Correct You, Being Reachable Is Not Being Correctable. These share one structural claim with one moving part.
- Prior-art anchor: the jangle fallacy, Truman L. Kelley, Interpretation of Educational Measurements, 1927; Lawson and Robins 2021 guideline for evaluating jingle and jangle fallacies. A jangle fallacy infers that differently named measures track different constructs.
- Empirical anchor: Wampold 2015, How important are the common factors in psychotherapy, World Psychiatry; dismantling meta-analyses finding near-zero differences (about d=0.01) between a treatment and the same treatment with a supposed active ingredient removed. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/wps.20238
- Primary-text comparison: Garab Dorje, Three Statements That Strike the Vital Point (self-liberating recognition, no added corrector demanded); Shinran, Tannisho and On Jinen Honi (correction carried by vow and naturalness, not by a reachable person); Dogen, Bendowa and Genjokoan (practice-realization, correction is the form rather than a later check); Bahiya instruction, Udana 1.10 (immediate release that installs no witness or custodian). The comparison shows these paths locate correction in form, vow, or recognition rather than in a reachable external corrector.
- Practitioner-method lens: Advaita neti-neti applied reflexively to the cluster itself, subtracting each variant's surface label to ask what is left; corrected by a committed-assertion pass so that subtraction does not become refusal to name what is real.

- Supports existing core Teachings: A Distinction Is Not A Discovery; Keep What Can Correct You; Wisdom Is Networked. This finding does not propose a new doctrine.
