Practice / retired / low risk
Before you treat your comparison as fact, let one other person read the same pair without seeing your answer.
To test whether a felt agreement or clash between two teachings is in the texts or in your own reading.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Mistaking a personal interpretation for a discovery about traditions, then building belief, identity, or withdrawal from belonging on it.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable reflective readers who compare spiritual or philosophical teachings and are about to draw a conclusion, post it, or use it to justify a choice.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, grief needing care, OCD or scrupulosity loops, or people whose main need is contact and belonging rather than analysis. Not a substitute for a teacher, scholar, clinician, or community where one is needed.
Steps
- Write the two teachings you are comparing, in plain words, with their sources.
- Write how you broke them into parts and what you think is bent, dropped, or added to make them agree or clash.
- Give only the two teachings and your part-breaking method, not your verdict, to one careful person.
- Ask them to break the teachings into parts and say what is bent, dropped, or added.
- Compare. If you used the same parts and reached the same verdict, you may have found something in the texts. If you split them differently or disagreed, mark your verdict as a personal reading.
- Do not announce, post, or act on the comparison until you have noted whether it was repeatable.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether the other reader segments the teachings the same way you did.
- Whether your confidence drops when you see how much the verdict depended on your choices.
- Whether the check makes you more careful, or only more suspicious of every comparison.
- Whether a repeatable reading changes what you do, or only what you feel.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if the practice becomes endless second-guessing, increases rumination, or is used to avoid honest commitment and belonging. It is a check on confidence, not a reason to never decide.
Weakens if
What would count against it
Ordinary careful reading or one trusted conversation works as well, the second reader defers to you instead of reading independently, or repeatable agreement turns out to be common, which would mean the comparison was evidence and the check was unnecessary.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Run mode: Critique. The active frontier is translation strain as a test of convergence. This run pressures the frontier's foundation rather than proposing another rubric.
- Translation-strain cluster under audit: Convergence as Translation Strain, Translation Strain as a Load Test for Convergence, No Word Travels Alone, A Shared Word Is Not Two Witnesses, Ask Who Taught The Answer, The Ruler Decides the Distance, How Much Do Any Two Teachings Differ, Held Sentences Need Living Carriers, A Shared Word Needs Keepers. Across more than twenty records, every version asks comparers to code what is bent, dropped, or added, and many follow-ups say run inter-rater reliability before public use, yet no record reports a reliability result.
- Primary-text comparison: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23, the unseen seer and knower, read against SN 22.59 Anattalakkhana Sutta, where consciousness itself is not fit to be owned. The comparison shows the claim units are not given by the texts; one comparer treats the knower as one unit, another splits it into witness, ownership, continuity, and substrate, and each segmentation yields a different strain score before any scoring rule applies.
- Thinking method source: Buddhist not-self observation, turned on the act of comparison itself; critique of the method: it can dissolve confidence in every judgment, so it was balanced by scientific-critique discipline that converts the worry into a measurable demand for coder agreement.
- Closest prior arguments: Jonathan Z. Smith, In Comparison a Magic Dwells; Oliver Freiberger, Elements of a Comparative Methodology; Raimon Panikkar, homeomorphic equivalence.
- Modern human-condition grounding: U.S. Surgeon General social connection advisory, for the lonely eclectic reader who uses comparison-skepticism to withhold from belonging.
