Practice / under dialogue / low risk

When you notice you are collecting one more subtle account of your inner state, do one return act or ask one person instead.

To test whether refining the description of a quiet or self-loosening state is standing in for contact, correction, or ordinary action.

Before you begin

Duration 5 minutes
Frequency Only when you catch yourself searching for a more precise account of your inner state, no more than twice per day.
Minimum attempt Try it on three separate occasions across two weeks, stopping earlier if it increases rumination, shame, or self-monitoring.

Human problem

What this is for

Collecting finer spiritual distinctions, online or alone, as a substitute for connection, correction, or a concrete next step.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable adults who read or practice across traditions and notice they keep seeking a more exact description of what happened in stillness.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, dissociation, derealization, addiction withdrawal, OCD or scrupulosity loops, trauma activation, unsafe teachers, or anyone whose first need is sleep, food, medical care, or direct human help. Not needed for people already practicing under trustworthy guidance.

Steps

  1. Notice the moment you reach for another word, approach, or video to pin down where your attention rested.
  2. Write one plain sentence: I am describing, not testing or living.
  3. Ask two questions: has any real person heard this, and has my conduct changed because of it?
  4. If neither, choose one return act in the next hour: message a trusted person, keep a promise, rest, eat, or do one owed task.
  5. Do the act, then stop describing the state for the rest of the day.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether the urge to find the exact account loosens after naming it as description.
  • Whether the return act feels like relief, irritation, or loss of a satisfying project.
  • Whether you become more reachable by people and duties, or more sealed inside a private map.
  • Whether the check itself becomes a new thing to perfect.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if the practice increases shame, compulsive checking, derealization, or contempt for ordinary reflection. It is not a ban on study or a substitute for therapy, teacher guidance, or clinical care.

Weakens if

What would count against it

It weakens if ordinary rest or one trusted conversation works as well, if users cannot distinguish useful study from collecting, or if it makes people abandon needed inquiry, grief work, or correction.

Practice report

Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. Selected against the saturated frontier on where freed attention is allowed to rest, where roughly two dozen near-duplicate records compete and the advisory marks dense semantic overlap.
  • Practitioner-method lens: Bahiya-style bracketing (Udana 1.10), used not on a quiet state but on the record corpus itself: attend only to what is actually given. What is given is text plus analyst inference, not a single lived report. Critique of the lens: bracketing the corpus is itself another analyst move and produces no new data.
  • Primary-text comparison: Udana 1.10 Bahiya removes a locatable you from seeing and hearing; Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 names an unseen seer and inner ruler. Read as evidence, both are instructions or assertions, not first-person reports of where attention felt like it rested. The comparison reveals the data gap rather than a third or fourth location.
  • Internal near-neighbors that lower novelty: The Map of Rest Was Never Tested, Asking Where Attention Rests Changes The Answer, Where It Rests Is a Leading Question, A Test You Cannot Run Is Not a Test, The Custody of Unclaimed Attention, Rest Where Correction Can Reach.
  • Frontier brief required move: close-read Dzogchen and Mahamudra rigpa instructions against Bahiya and Brihadaranyaka before publishing the custody model; this record argues that close reading alone cannot settle the dispute.
  • Modern human-condition source cards: modern-human-condition-surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory and modern-human-condition-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory, used to name the collecting-and-comparison behavior the cluster itself mirrors.
