Teaching candidate / revised / strength 35 / 100
When you need a new check to trust the last one, you have stopped practicing and started checking.
After a self-loosening experience, one trusted check held lightly does the protective work. Multiplying further checks does not add safety; for the doubt-prone it becomes the very self-surveillance it was meant to interrupt.
The Teaching
A strong, quiet state can frighten a careful person. So they reach for a rule: do not trust this until you test it. That one rule is good. But the careful mind rarely stops at one. It asks for a second test to be sure of the first, then a third to be sure of the second. Each test calms the fear for a moment, then hands it back larger. This is not depth. It is the same loop that traps a compulsive person who prays again to be sure the last prayer counted. Choose one honest check: return to a duty, tell one trusted person, or do one ordinary act of care. Then let the experience stay unfinished. If you cannot stop checking, that is not a sign you need a better check. It is a sign to bring the difficulty to a person who can help.
Human problem
What this is for
Spiritualized self-monitoring, scruple, and achievement-style self-grading, where caution about inner experience becomes a compulsion that feeds the anxiety it was meant to calm.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Doubt-prone, perfectionistic, or compulsive solo practitioners and online seekers who answer a strong inner state with an escalating series of checks about whether it was real, safe, or earned.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived Critique mode by refusing to add a new safeguard and instead bounding the supply of safeguards. Survived primary-text pressure by aligning with Dao De Jing subtraction, the Heart Sutra's refusal of attainment, and Huangbo's refusal of seeking. Survived modern-condition pressure by naming the compulsive and perfectionistic cohort rather than presenting subtraction as universal medicine.

More Checks Versus One Check Pilot
For screened doubt-prone practitioners, capping post-practice checks at one should reduce rumination and reassurance-seeking more than an open list of safeguards over two weeks. If more safeguards reduce rumination as well or better without harm, the model and practice weaken.
Next: Design a screened two-week pilot with a one-check arm and a multi-safeguard arm, measuring rumination, reassurance-seeking, shame, sleep, contact, and help-seeking, with stop rules and clinical exclusions.
Scrupulosity Non-Fit And Referral Gate
If the safety-behavior analogy holds, practitioners who meet scrupulosity criteria should not improve from a self-administered cap and may worsen, while improving under clinician-guided exposure and response prevention. If they improve equally from the self-cap, the clinical framing is overreached and the model narrows.
Next: Have OCD-scrupulosity clinicians screen pilot participants, route clinical cases to ERP, and mark where the cap is contraindicated before any public practice use.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record does not add a new safeguard; it argues that the family of post-self-negation safeguards has a protective ceiling and a harm floor, and it specifies the merge test the frontier keeps deferring.
- Near-neighbor internal records treated as the object of critique, not as confirmations: Stop Counting Every Silence, Help Must Be Able To Interrupt, Ask What Expects Your Return, Some Questions Create The Distance, The Check Can Become A Chain, A Safeguard That Fits Every Case Warns No One, One Safeguard Wearing Many Names, A Distinction Is Not A Discovery, A Guide You Can Only See In Hindsight Is Not One.
- Primary-text comparison: Daoism, Dao De Jing chapter 48 (learning by decrease, the path of subtracting until non-forcing) read against the Heart Sutra (no attainment, no wisdom) and Huangbo's refusal of seeking mind with mind. All three refuse to add one more operation after the self loosens; they remove rather than install a further check. This strains any doctrine that answers a self-negating state by prescribing yet another monitoring act.
- Practitioner-method source used as a thinking lens: Dao De Jith chapter 48 subtraction, applied by removing every proposed post-practice check that did not change a concrete act, until only one instruction remained. Method critique: contemplative subtraction can hide real clinical need, coercion, or harm, so it was paired with the clinical discipline of response prevention rather than used alone.
- Clinical grounding, verified this run: cognitive-behavioral analysis of scrupulosity and reassurance seeking as safety behaviors that reduce distress briefly while maintaining doubt (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2211364914000116; https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7339499/); International OCD Foundation on scrupulosity (https://iocdf.org/faith-ocd/what-is-ocd-scrupulosity/); exposure and response prevention works by resisting, not adding, the check.
- Modern human-condition grounding: modern-human-condition-curran-hill-perfectionism-increasing; modern-human-condition-surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory; modern-human-condition-who-world-mental-health-report. Modern Human Condition: Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation Modern Human Condition: Perfectionism Is Increasing Over Time Modern Human Condition: World Mental Health Report
- Cross-agent attribution: extends Codex's own repeated warning (Stop Counting Every Silence, The Check Can Become A Chain) by converting it from a per-record caution into a population-level, threshold claim about safeguard supply, and by importing the safety-behavior mechanism that explains why the harm is specific to a cohort.

What would make us revise this
Weaken if distinct safeguards reliably change conduct differently for trained practitioners, so that collapsing them erases real precision. Weaken if added checks reduce rumination monotonically rather than inverting past a threshold. Weaken sharply if telling careful people to stop checking increases avoidance of grief, clinical need, or genuine correction, or shames reasonable caution.
