Love keeps a person near and willing to be corrected. Whether love itself knows another more truly than careful attention does is not established, and should not be claimed.
The Teaching
It is easy to mistake a thing said many times for a thing known to be true. We have said again and again that love must stay open to correction, and the saying is good. But notice what the saying quietly assumes: that love sees more clearly than ordinary careful attention. That has not been shown. A stranger who watches closely, asks honestly, and stays exposed may know you as well. So hold the smaller, sturdier claim. Let love be the reason you stay near and keep asking. Do not let it be the proof that you already understand.
