Teaching candidate / revised / strength 25 / 100
When attention comes loose, do not hand it to the first thing that will judge you.
After a quiet moment or a stopped scroll, attention does not need a new owner; it needs a little while with no verdict before it settles into care.
The Teaching
Sometimes attention lets go of its usual grip. A practice ends, the feed closes, the noise drops. In that open moment the mind looks for somewhere to land. Often it lands on a comparison, a score, a worry about how you are doing. Notice the reaching before you obey it. You do not have to decide right away where the openness belongs. Let it stay open long enough to come back to a person, a task, or an ordinary kindness, rather than to a judge.
Human problem
What this is for
Digital comparison, loneliness, and achievement-contingent self-worth, where attention that has just come loose re-attaches to the feed, to a verdict, or to self-monitoring.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Digitally saturated adults and solo app meditators who notice attention loosening after practice or after stopping a scroll and feel it pulled toward comparison or self-judgment.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survives the contrast between traditions that locate a recipient for loosened attention and traditions that refuse any location, by not claiming which is true; it asks only that the modern reader not re-home loosened attention onto a verdict-giver.
Evidence Trail
Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. The frontier 'Where freed attention is allowed to rest' is densely populated by custody, correction-holder, and support-locus records, yet its own decisive test remains unrun.
- Thinking-method source: Bahiya-style bracketing (Udana 1.10), used as a lens by attending only to what is actually given when self-reference drops; criticized below because bracketing can quietly convert a doctrinal overlay into a felt finding.
- Primary-text comparison: Udana 1.10 (no 'you' in the seen) against Brihadaranyaka 3.7.23 (the unseen seer/knower as inner Self) against Tilopa Ganges Mahamudra and Patrul Tsiksum Nedek (rigpa rests nowhere, non-fixating) against Pseudo-Dionysius Mystical Theology (the Cause beyond affirmation and negation). The comparison shows four explicit, incompatible answers about where attention belongs after object-fixation drops.
- Internal near-neighbors weakened or merged here: The Custody of Unclaimed Attention; Rest Where Correction Can Reach; Some Paths Refuse the Question of What Remains; Not Every Freedom Needs an Owner; Letting Go Is Not Finding a New Home; Negation Does Not Tell You What Holds You.
- Modern human-condition grounding: Surgeon General social connection advisory and youth social-media advisory, for the cohort whose loosened attention re-homes onto comparison, the feed, or self-monitoring.

What would make us revise this
Weakens if the loosened moment is rare or unrecognizable for the cohort, if naming the reaching becomes another self-monitoring loop, or if the planned interview shows that where attention lands is set by training, not by an open interval available to anyone.
