It is easy to believe that because you love someone, you know what they need. With an infant, a parent who can no longer speak, or a friend near death, that belief feels like certainty, and there is no one to correct it. Hold it more lightly. Read the body, the history, the patterns. Ask one other person who knows them. Your love is the reason you keep showing up and keep looking; it is not a private channel that cannot be wrong. Let love make you faithful, and let evidence make you careful.
