When a new name changes nothing, the next name is not the cure.

A problem named many ways without a test is not better understood; it is being avoided. The next step is the one test, not the next name.

The Teaching

There is a kind of thinking that feels like progress and is really delay. You describe the trouble again, more precisely, with a better word, and for a moment it seems you are closer. But nothing in your day has changed, and tomorrow you will describe it again. When several careful names leave your conduct untouched, stop adding names. Find the one small test that would tell you which name was true, and run it. If you cannot run it, say why plainly. The honest move is rarely a finer distinction. It is the act you keep deferring.

Human problem

What this is for

Rumination and intellectualization as avoidance: turning a wound, a decision, or a fear into an endless project of re-description instead of taking the one action that would resolve or test it.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Reflective, anxious over-thinkers; researchers, students, founders, and people in therapy who are fluent enough to keep renaming a problem and use that fluency to avoid the decisive, exposing act.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived critique mode by refusing to add a distinction and instead merging the correction cluster. Survived the primary-text pass by aligning Madhyamaka's diagnosis of the remainder-search with the metacognitive account of perseverative analysis. Survived modern-condition pressure by naming rumination and the positive belief that more analysis is more safety.

Decisive Test Versus More Reflection Journal

Stable over-thinkers using The One Test Rule should report lower rumination and more concrete action on a stuck problem than when they write a longer reflection on the same problem. If the longer reflection reduces rumination as well or better without raising avoidance, the practice and the rumination analogy weaken.

Next: Run a screened two-week within-person pilot comparing the one-test rule against an expanded-reflection control, tracking rumination, action taken, shame, and help-seeking, with hard clinical exclusions.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Inferential policy after objectless awareness / Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record does not add a distinction; it argues the correction cluster should be frozen and merged until one shared test runs.
  • Internal near-neighbor cluster under critique: Codex 'The Same Words Ask Different Questions', 'Stop Counting Every Silence', 'Help Must Be Able To Interrupt', 'Ask What Expects Your Return', 'One Safeguard Wearing Many Names', 'A Guide You Can Only See In Hindsight Is Not One'; Claude 'A New Name Is Not New Help'; carried truths 'A Distinction Is Not A Discovery' and 'Keep Only the Distinction That Changes What You Do'. These are treated as the data, not as cited authority.
  • Psychometric grounding: jingle-jangle fallacies (Thorndike 1904; Kelley 1927; Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingle-jangle_fallacies). Jangle fallacy: calling one construct by many names and mistaking the label variance for real difference. Wulff and Mata 2026, 'Escaping the Jingle-Jangle Jungle', https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/09637214251382083, and Elson et al. 2023 on 38,000+ constructs and 43,000+ measures in PsycTests, used as analogy and design constraint for runaway construct proliferation.
  • Practitioner-method lens: Madhyamaka prasanga / reductio (Nagarjuna, MMK 18.1-2 with Candrakirti's Prasannapada) read against Huangbo's refusal of the search (Chuanxin Fayao). Applied by turning the cluster's own logic on itself: if searching for a remainder after negation is grasping, then searching for a new name for correction after the test is named may be the research analogue of that grasping. Method critique below.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: metacognitive model of rumination (Wells and Matthews; Wells excerpt https://www.guilford.com/excerpts/wells.pdf), where positive metacognitive beliefs ('more analysis keeps me prepared') sustain the Cognitive Attentional Syndrome. Plus modern-human-condition-who-world-mental-health-report and modern-human-condition-surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory for rumination, loneliness, and the boundary that reflection cannot replace contact or care. Modern Human Condition: Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation Modern Human Condition: World Mental Health Report
  • Primary-text comparison performed: Nagarjuna MMK 18.1-2 (the post-negation search is itself grasping) versus the metacognitive model (perseverative analysis maintains distress). The comparison reveals that the contemplative source and the clinical source agree against the research loop: continued refinement is not neutral progress but evidence the process has not been understood or has become avoidance.

What would make us revise this

Weaken if blind reviewers can name a distinct decision for most cluster records, since then the names tracked real differences. Weaken if early proliferation reliably precedes genuine discovery, so that a stopping rule suppresses real finds. Weaken if, for the target cohort, writing the decisive test increases paralysis or shame rather than action.

Is this a public Teaching?

No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
