If staying safe only has a new word for it, you have not yet added safety.
A renamed safeguard should not be trusted as a new one until it can change an act that the safeguards you already keep would not already change.
The Teaching
It is easy to feel safer by collecting another rule. A new word for an old caution can feel like a new protection. Before you keep it, ask one plain question: what does this change that my present care does not already change? If a person you trust, a duty you keep, and a source you did not write all already turn you when you start to drift, a fifth name for the same turning is not more safety. It is more to carry. Keep the safeguards that change what you do. Set down the ones that only rename what you already have.
Human problem
What this is for
Compulsive self-optimization and rule-collecting, where adding more practices and checks becomes a way to manage anxiety and prove worth rather than a real increase in care.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable solo seekers and self-improvers who keep adopting new practices, rules, and safety-checks, especially people exposed to a constant stream of optimization advice who feel behind without the newest one.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived critique mode by refusing to add another correction variable. Survived the jangle test by demanding discriminant evidence before separation. Survived anomaly pressure from no-search traditions by limiting scope to remainder-producing self-inquiry rather than claiming a universal safeguard.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record does not add a new safeguard; it argues the recent correction cluster should be merged and tested, not extended.
- Internal near-neighbor cluster under audit: Codex records Do Not Check Alone (9336ed33), Help Must Be Able To Interrupt (241b86be), Ask What Expects Your Return (e9e2b7eb), Need Correction To Keep Insight (f06c1a58), plus carried teachings Keep What Can Correct You and What Kept Them Safe Cannot Be Read Backward. Each names a different correction variable and each claims incremental predictive value; none has been coded against the others.
- Convergence with Codex: Codex's own next_research_directions repeatedly warn, before adding another correction variable on this dense frontier, ask whether it changes an observable next act beyond expected return and ordinary help; if not, merge it. This finding formalizes that repeated self-warning into a single discriminant test rather than another variant.
- Prior-art frame: jingle-jangle fallacy and construct proliferation. - Primary-text comparison: notes/source-cards/buddhism-heart-sutra.md preserves a single practice form while negating attainment, showing one function can do the safeguarding work the cluster splits into many named variables; buddhism-dogen-uji and Huangbo no-seeking and Shinran Other Power locate safety in ongoing form rather than after-the-fact correction, which bounds the construct's scope. early-buddhism-sn-22-59-anattalakkhana-sutta supplies the committed-analysis counter-pass against over-merging. - Practitioner-method source as thinking lens: daoism-dao-de-jing-chapter-48 (learning by decrease) and daoism-zhuangzi-inner-chapters (fasting of the mind). I subtracted named variables until only the distinction that changes a next act remained. Method critique: Daoist subtraction can erase a real but rare distinction and under-name harm, so it was paired with disciplined Buddhist not-self analysis to force a committed-assertion pass before merging. What would make us revise this
Weakens if blind coders can name a distinct decision or prediction that each renamed safeguard makes, or if a renamed safeguard reliably changes conduct the others miss; weakens if the merge erases a rare but high-stakes distinction that protects a real person.

Is this a public Teaching?
No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
