If your safeguards only multiply and never shrink, the growth is the warning, not the wisdom.
Lumenary should hold, as a research heuristic, that a system of spiritual safeguards is judged by whether it can retire a rule, not by whether each rule sounds wise; a safeguard set that can only add is functioning as avoidance.
The Teaching
After a frightening or loosening experience, it is natural to build rules to stay safe: check this, confess that, never do the other. Notice what the rules do over time. If each new rule calms you for an hour and then the danger feels more real, so a further rule is needed, you are not getting safer; you are feeding the fear in careful language. Good protection can shrink. Before adding another safeguard, ask what decision it changes that your existing ones do not. If it changes nothing, the urge to add it is the thing to watch.
Human problem
What this is for
Anxiety, compulsive self-monitoring, and meaning loss in people who try to make themselves safe after an intense experience by accumulating private spiritual or moral rules.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable, mostly self-directed practitioners and self-taught online seekers who respond to fear or a strong inner experience by adding more inner checks, confessions, or rules rather than fewer.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived near-duplicate pressure by refusing to add another safeguard and instead merging the cluster under a growth-dynamics test. Survived the Huangbo anomaly by treating proliferation as later of search-structured method rather than as universal. Held to the clinical boundary that compulsive checking is not corrected by more checking.

Earn Its Place Diary Pilot
Stable self-directed practitioners using The Rule That Must Earn Its Place should show fewer newly adopted rules, less reassurance seeking, and lower rumination over two weeks than their own prior free rule-adding, with no rise in shame. If shame or checking rises, or if ordinary rest performs as well, the practice should be narrowed or retired.
Next: Pilot with screened volunteers already practicing alone, with 24-hour follow-up notes, exclusion of clinical risk, and a comparison arm of one trusted conversation without rule analysis.
Evidence Trail
Source Basis
- Mode chosen: Critique. Active frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record does not add a new safeguard. It merges and freezes the correction cluster by shifting judgment from each rule to the growth dynamics of the whole set, and it should not publish as doctrine.
- Reflexive evidence case: the frontier has produced a long run of near-duplicate safeguard records (Correction Needs A Non-Editable Carrier, Correction Must Be Exercised, Help Must Be Able To Interrupt, A Check Must Be Able To Pass, Ask What Expects Your Return, Stop Counting Every Silence, The Same Words Ask Different Questions, When Caution Becomes The Compulsion). Each sounds wise; the system's own suggested directions already call for a moratorium and one shared outcome-blind coding test. This is treated as a live instance to be tested, not as proof.
- Clinical anchor (empirical): reassurance seeking and compulsive checking maintain anxiety by preventing disconfirmation of the feared outcome; response prevention, not more checking, is the corrective. See International OCD Foundation summaries and Excessive reassurance seeking versus compulsive checking in OCD, ScienceDirect S0005791621000859; PMC7339499 on reassurance seeking and OC symptoms.
- Measurement anchor (empirical-adjacent): construct proliferation and the jangle fallacy describe how a field accumulates differently named measures with no incremental validity; the grit-conscientiousness case shows a plausible new construct that failed discriminant validity. See Lawson and Robins guideline extensions (Springer S13428-025-02691-6); Wulff and Mata, Escaping the Jingle-Jangle Jungle (2026).
- Practitioner-method lens: daoism-dao-de-jing-chapter-48, learning by daily decrease. Applied by subtracting safeguards until only those that change a decision remained. Method critique: subtraction can excuse dropping a protection that is genuinely needed, so it was paired with the OCD-safety literature and a discriminant test before any rule is retired. - Primary-text comparison: Huangbo Xiyun, Chuanxin Fayao, treats the seeking itself as the error and carries almost no growing safeguard apparatus, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huangbo_Xiyun; contrast with search-structured analytic methods (neti neti in advaita-vedanta-brihadaranyaka-upanishad-3-7-23; aggregate analysis in SN 22.59) that keep the search open and therefore keep generating remainders to manage. The comparison reveals that safeguard proliferation is downstream of methods that keep the search running, not a universal feature of self-negation. Advaita Vedanta: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23

These ground anxiety, scrupulous self-monitoring, and isolation in self-taught seekers who accumulate private spiritual safety rules. - Internal near-neighbors that lower novelty: A Check Must Be Able To Pass; A Distinction Is Not A Discovery; A New Name Is Not New Help; When Caution Becomes The Compulsion; The Check Can Become A Chain. This record's contribution over them is the unit shift: judge the set by whether it can shrink, not the rule by whether it is plausible.
- Supports the existing core Teaching 'Keep What Can Correct You' by naming its failure mode: a correction that can only accumulate stops correcting.

What would make us revise this
Weakens if blind coders find most members of a growing safeguard set change distinct decisions, if differentiated safeguards reduce harm without raising rumination, or if mature traditions already teach a clear stop-and-retire rule, making this only a restatement.
