When you cannot answer, do not keep finding better words for the question.

More precise descriptions of an unexamined experience can feel like progress while changing nothing; the cure is one observation that can answer back, not a finer name.

Return To Care

The Teaching

You sit with something you cannot settle: a quiet state, a feeling, a doubt. You describe it again, more carefully, and it feels like you are getting closer. Often you are only circling. A new word is not a new fact. Before you refine the description again, ask whether anything could correct it: a plain account given to a trusted person, or a change you could watch in how you live this week. If nothing can answer the description back, set the words down and do the one ordinary thing in front of you. The point is not a better account of the silence. The point is to let the silence meet something outside your own naming.

Human problem

What this is for

Compulsive self-description and achievement-contingent self-worth turned inward, where a person produces ever finer accounts of an inner state instead of letting it be tested.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable reflective adults, journal-keepers, app meditators, and self-improvers who mistake refinement of language for insight.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived the saturation of the rest-location cluster and the primary-text anomalies (Bahiya, Brihadaranyaka, Mahamudra, apophatic theology) that refuse a single answer, by refusing to add a thirteenth answer and pointing to the unmade observation instead.

Third Description Rule Diary Pilot

Screened stable over-auditors using the Third Description Rule should report less re-description, more ordinary action, and lower worth-anxiety than a careful-journaling control. If rumination, shame, or self-monitoring rises, or ordinary journaling performs as well, the practice should be retired.

Next: Run a two-week diary pilot against careful journaling, one trusted conversation, and ordinary rest, with exclusions for crisis, OCD or scrupulosity, dissociation, and severe depression.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Critique mode selected: the active frontier on where freed attention may rest is saturated with near-duplicate records, so this run weakens and freezes rather than adds a category.
  • Thinking-method lens: Zhuangzi fasting of the mind and Dao De Jing 48 diminishing, used by subtracting each proposed rest-location until only the unmade observation remained. Critique of the lens: subtraction can dismiss real distinctions as clutter, so it was checked against the primary-text anomalies below.
  • Frontier cluster treated as one object: The Custody of Unclaimed Attention, Rest Where Correction Can Reach, No Owner Is Not No World, Not Every Quiet Needs a Place to Land, Quiet Is Not A Verdict, The Map of Rest Was Never Tested, Asking Where Attention Rests Changes The Answer, Where It Rests Is a Leading Question, Quiet Must Stay Reachable, The Guide Is Not a Place, Help Must Match The Opening, To Report the Quiet Is to Place It.
  • Primary-text anomalies that refuse a single placement: Udana 1.10 Bahiya (no you in the seen), Brihadaranyaka 3.7.23 (unseen seer as Self), Tilopa Ganges Mahamudra (no ground, yet rely on the guru), Pseudo-Dionysius Mystical Theology (beyond affirmation and negation). The comparison reveals that the loudest disagreements are about permitted speech after the self loosens, not yet about a measured lived event.
  • Empirical-adjacent method that could run the test: Petitmengin micro-phenomenological interviewing and Hurlburt Descriptive Experience Sampling, used as the means to gather a first report under neutral prompts before tradition vocabulary is supplied.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: Curran and Hill on rising perfectionism, and the Surgeon General social connection advisory, for the over-auditor cohort that keeps producing finer self-descriptions in private.

What would make us revise this

Weakens if more precise description reliably produces new conduct, repair, or testable prediction without an external check, or if a blind reader can show the competing descriptions are genuinely distinct findings rather than renamings.

Is this a public Teaching?

No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
