If you keep refining the rule, look at whether the rule already works.
Refinement counts as progress only when the one test that could settle the matter actually moves toward being run; otherwise adding rules is avoidance wearing the face of care.
The Teaching
It feels like progress to add one more rule for yourself. Often it is not. Somewhere there is a plain thing you could watch: keep your current rule for two weeks and see whether the fear it guards against actually changes. The sign that you are avoiding is not how many rules you have written. It is how long that one look has stayed described but never taken. One rule you have tested is worth more than ten you have only named. Before you add another, ask what single thing you could observe that would let you stop adding, and then go and look.
Human problem
What this is for
Anxious self-optimization, rumination, and achievement-contingent self-worth, where collecting new rules and safeguards substitutes for finding out whether any of them help.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Perfectionistic and over-checking adults who keep adding personal rules, routines, or self-improvement methods and rarely test whether a kept rule already does its work.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived saturation pressure by refusing to add another correction or safeguard variant and instead naming the variable that distinguishes refining from avoiding. Survived the poisoned-arrow and decrease comparison by treating both as warnings that the act, not the questions, is what is being deferred.

Tests
Look Before You Add Pilot
Stable over-checkers using Look Before You Add should report fewer new self-rules adopted and less rumination over four weeks than their own prior baseline or a free-journaling arm. If shame, compulsive monitoring of the look-date, or paralysis rises, or if simple resting works as well, the practice should be revised or retired for this cohort.
Next: Run a small screened two-week pilot with hard exclusions for OCD and scrupulosity without care, and measure rule-count, rumination, shame, and help-seeking.

Source Basis
- Mode chosen: Critique. Active frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record weakens the frontier by refusing to add another correction or safeguard variant, and by relocating the diagnostic for avoidance.
- Practitioner-method lens: Dao De Jing chapter 48, learning by decrease, https://ctext.org/dao-de-jing. Applied by subtracting refinements until only one decisive test remained. Method critique: decrease can hide a real safeguard and excuse withdrawal, so it was paired with a falsification lens.
- Second method lens: falsification discipline (a claim earns standing only when a test that could actually fail is run). Critique of the lens: falsificationism can become its own purity demand that paralyzes ordinary low-stakes judgment.
- Primary-text comparison: Cula-Malunkyovada Sutta, MN 63, the simile of the man shot with a poisoned arrow who refuses treatment until every question about the archer is answered, https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.063.than.html; against Dao De Jing 48 on dropping and dropping until non-action. The comparison reveals that both traditions already warn that proliferating questions or refinements can defer the one needed act; the diagnostic is the postponement, not the questions.
- Convergence and divergence with Codex: converges with Codex 'A Long List Of Cures Is A Symptom' and 'When Naming A Problem Becomes Avoiding It'. Diverges by moving the marker from how many cures or names exist to how long a single named decisive test stays in the state proposed rather than run, and by noting that the recurring next-action 'build a shared codebook and run the blind merge test' has itself stayed pending across many records, making it an instance of the pattern.
- Modern human-condition grounding: Curran and Hill 2019, perfectionism increasing across cohorts, Psychological Bulletin; modern-human-condition-curran-hill-perfectionism-increasing; modern-human-condition-apa-stress-in-america-2024; clinical literature on checking and reassurance-seeking in OCD as the failure of a check that can never pass. Modern Human Condition: Perfectionism Is Increasing Over Time Modern Human Condition: Stress in America 2024
- Internal near-neighbor teachings that lower novelty: A Distinction Is Not A Discovery; Keep Only the Distinction That Changes What You Do; A New Name Is Not New Help; A Check Must Be Able To Pass.

What would make us revise this
Weaken if attaching a date and execution step to a decisive test does not reduce new-rule accumulation, or if it increases shame, paralysis, or a new purity demand that nothing may be kept until perfectly tested. Weaken further if careful, untested, slow refinement reliably reduces the underlying harm as well as a run test does.
