Keeping someone who can correct you is not the same as having somewhere to rest.
After a strong quiet, two different needs travel together: where attention may finally rest, and what may still correct how you read the experience. A safety answer should not be handed over as if it answered the longing for rest.
The Teaching
When stillness comes and the ordinary self loosens, two questions arrive at once. One asks where your attention is now allowed to rest. The other asks who or what can still correct you. Keep both, but do not let the second pretend to be the first. Being answerable is protection; it is not yet rest. If every account of your quiet ends only in who may overrule you, you have been kept safe and left unhoused. Name the resting question on its own, and let it stay open until something real answers it.
Human problem
What this is for
Spiritual isolation and the quiet exhaustion of solitary practitioners who, after a calm or self-loosening experience, are repeatedly told to monitor and correct themselves rather than shown anywhere their attention may finally rest.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults who practice mostly alone, read across traditions, and tend to be lonely; people for whom 'keep a corrector' lands as one more demand to police even their stillness.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived close reading of three texts that give opposite resting answers (Bahiya no-location, Brihadaranyaka witness, apophatic God-directedness) against a cluster that gives all three the same correction prescription.

Two Lines After Quiet Pilot
Lonely solitary practitioners using Two Lines After Quiet should report less sense of being policed and more ability to describe rest without converting it to a safety check than a control that writes a single free reflection. If the resting line is reliably empty or anxiety rises, the practice and the resting-place referent both weaken.
Next: Run a two-week screened diary pilot with free-reflection control and exclusions for crisis, compulsion, dissociation, and unsafe authority.
Evidence Trail
Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Where freed attention is allowed to rest. This record does not add a finding to the frontier; it argues the frontier has been answered, run after run, by quietly substituting an easier question.
- Internal saturation pressure: the recent cluster (The Road Must Hold You First, Build The Door Before The Quiet, Leave One Door Open, No Place Is Not No Care, Stillness Does Not Authorize Itself, Correction Scales With Claim Risk, The Refuser Is Part Of The Medicine) all answer 'what can correct the person afterward' rather than 'where is attention allowed to rest'. The suggested-directions ledger already flags these as near-duplicates and asks for a blind distinct-decision test.
- Primary comparison 1: Bahiya Sutta, Udana 1.10 (dhammatalks.org; accesstoinsight.org). 'In the seen, only the seen ... you are neither here nor yonder nor between the two.' The instruction names a no-location: attention is allowed to rest nowhere locatable.
- Primary comparison 2: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 (vivekavani.com; swami-krishnananda.org). 'He is never seen, but is the Seer ... your Self, the Inner Controller, the Immortal.' Attention is allowed to rest as the unobjectifiable witness. These two texts give opposite answers to the resting-place question.
- Primary comparison 3: Christian apophatic prayer (Pseudo-Dionysius, Mystical Theology) directs the loosened self toward God beyond name. A third, different resting answer.
- Thinking-method source: neti-neti negation from Brihadaranyaka, used to refuse the first apparent answer (correction) as the frontier's answer. Plus phenomenological bracketing: bracket the safety framing and read what the frontier literally asks. Method critique: bracketing can itself erase a real safety concern, so the finding keeps correction as valid safety doctrine while denying it is a resting-place answer.
- Modern human-condition source: U.S. Surgeon General 2023 social connection advisory (loneliness, isolation). Spiritual-bypassing and solitude-versus-isolation literature (Frontiers/PMC; researchgate phenomenology of spiritual bypass) grounds the cohort: lonely solitary practitioners.
- Closest external prior art: Katz constructivism and the Stace/Forman pure-consciousness debate (SEP Mysticism). Difference: those debate whether the experience is built or given; this record asks whether the cluster's stated answer discriminates among the very texts the frontier exists to sort.

What would make us revise this
Weakens if the resting-place question has no felt referent for trained practitioners, if correction prescriptions actually vary with where attention rests, or if separating the two questions increases anxiety rather than easing the sense of being policed.

No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
