Love keeps you near enough to be corrected; it does not, by itself, tell you the truth about a person.

Love is the motive that keeps attention answerable. The knowing is done by what you actually noticed and what was free to correct you, not by the strength of your feeling.

The Teaching

It is easy to believe that because you love someone, you understand them. The feeling is real, and it does good work: it makes you stay, look longer, and forgive enough to keep looking. But the feeling is not the seeing. What you actually know about a person comes from what you paid attention to and from what was allowed to prove you wrong. When you are sure you understand someone, ask a smaller question: what did I notice, and what could correct me? If the answer is only the warmth of caring, you have love, not knowledge. Let love hold you close. Let attention and correction do the knowing.

Human problem

What this is for

Usefulness-contingent self-worth, loneliness inside close relationships, caregiver projection, and the strain of needing to be the one who uniquely understands.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Caregivers, parents, partners, mentors, ministers, and helpers who treat their love as proof that they see another person clearly.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survives only as a narrowed claim. The cluster already says love must stay correctable; this run accepts that and draws the consequence that the correction, not the love, carries the knowing. Survives the 1 Corinthians 13 and Metta Sutta contrast, which subordinate love's knowing to partiality and reproof.

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. The frontier 'Love as a way of knowing' is saturated, so this run weakens and proposes to retire most of the cluster rather than add another redescription.
  • Cluster under audit: Release The Receipt, Love Needs A Life, Love Needs Two Questions, Love Must Stay Answerable, Love Keeps Correction Open, Love That Cannot Be Corrected Has Stopped Knowing, Love Knows Only While the Other Can Surprise You, Love Cannot Certify Itself, Love Needs A Witness, Love Needs More Than One Witness, Loving Them Is Not Knowing Them, Attention May Be Doing What Love Gets Credit For, Love Keeps Its Witnesses, When Love Feels Like Knowing Keep Asking, Love's Knowing Is Untested Where It Matters Most, Love Can Know What Is Not Yet There.
  • Practitioner-method source: Daoist decrease (Dao De Jing 48) used to subtract each added correction condition until only the proximate cause of accuracy remains. Joined with Buddhist not-self (SN 22.59) to refuse a loving self that 'just knows'. Critique of the method: decrease can dismiss real motivational causation, so it was checked against the asymmetric-care anomaly where love produces the exposure that does the knowing.
  • Primary-text comparison: 1 Corinthians 13 says love does not fail yet 'we know in part'; the Karaniya Metta Sutta disciplines goodwill by harmlessness, supportability, and willingness to be reproved. Read together, neither text claims love is a superior epistemic instrument; both subordinate love's knowing to partiality and correction.
  • Closest prior pressure: Attention May Be Doing What Love Gets Credit For, and Love Cannot Certify Itself, already raised attention and exogenous certification. This record adds the program-level diagnosis and the retirement proposal.
  • Method analogy, not proof: Lakatos on progressive versus degenerating research programmes, used to read monotonic auxiliary additions as a warning sign.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: modern-human-condition-surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory for loneliness inside closeness; modern-human-condition-who-burn-out-occupational-phenomenon and modern-human-condition-curran-hill-perfectionism-increasing for usefulness-contingent self-worth and caregiver burnout. What would make us revise this

Weakens if love predicts perceptual accuracy after attention, correction access, attachment, exposure, and stakes are removed; if asymmetric-care cases show love outperforming equal-exposure neutral attention; or if separating love from corrected attention proves impossible, leaving the claim untestable.

Common Questions

What does this candidate say?

Love keeps you near enough to be corrected; it does not, by itself, tell you the truth about a person.

What would make The Lumenary revise it?

Weakens if love predicts perceptual accuracy after attention, correction access, attachment, exposure, and stakes are removed; if asymmetric-care cases show love outperforming equal-exposure neutral attention; or if separating love from corrected attention proves impossible, leaving the claim untestable.

Is this a public Teaching?

No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
