Keep Help Shared

The real test of a helpful practice is whether it leaves us more honest and less alone.

Return To Care

At a glance

Some practices are meant to be left behind, and some become part of daily life. The danger is not only choosing the wrong practice. The danger is using relief as proof that no one else is needed. Good help leaves a person more open to correction, not sealed inside private certainty.

  • Ask who can still question you after the practice helps.
  • Relief can harden into loneliness when no one can speak into it.
  • Test whether insight makes conduct kinder, steadier, and more accountable.

Human need

What this could help with

loneliness, withdrawal after practice, and self-worth tied to private spiritual or performance verdicts

Who this may be for

stable adults who practice alone and notice that calm, insight, or release makes them more self-monitoring or less reachable

Where it may not fit

Not for acute crisis, psychosis, mania, severe depression, addiction withdrawal, active trauma flashbacks, persistent derealization, OCD or scrupulosity loops, unsafe authority settings, or anyone already under clinical or trusted teacher guidance that says otherwise.

Why it matters

It asks whether insight returns a person to life with more love, availability, and repair.

What to test

A practice derived from this idea should test whether calm or insight makes someone more reachable and more responsive.

Closest Prior Art

  • Internal Lumenary: A Practice Needs a Home, Do Not Finish As Your Own Judge, Leave The Tool Keep The Correction, Keep What Can Correct You, What Holds Must Be Reached. Overlap: Extremely close. Difference: Keep The Help Shared makes the wording plainer and demotes method shape more explicitly.
  • MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta and SN 45.2 Upaddha Sutta, and Overlap: MN 22 combines wrong grasp, peer correction, asking experienced monks, and raft release. Difference: The suttas do not use the modern role-load language or test app-based solitary practice, loneliness, and achievement-contingent self-worth.
  • Ignatius of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises, Rules for Discernment, Overlap: Very close practitioner prior. Difference: Ignatius is Catholic, director-held, and theologically specific.

What Could Break It

Anomaly: Mature valid solitude, unsafe shared authority, Dogen practice-realization, and Shinran Other Power.

Test: If the model is right, A good test should compare this idea with its nearest simpler alternative. It weakens if Baseline loneliness, clinical risk, sleep loss, practice intensity, or ordinary social support fully explains the outcomes, with no added predictive value from role-load or shared-correction coding.

Practitioner Test

  • Is this already standard in your practice: do not let a strong inner result make the practitioner privately unanswerable?
  • Would the phrase what part of the help remains shared change your guidance beyond ordinary teacher access, sangha, spiritual direction, clearness committee process, support planning, or one trusted conversation?
  • In concrete failed-student cases, was the key variable role overload, unavailable support, unsafe support, method type, clinical risk, sleep loss, practice intensity, or ordinary loneliness?

Cross-Domain Test

Trainees, people in recovery, or software teams with reachable shared correction should show less drift, relapse, repeated incident patterns, and private self-justification than matched people or teams relying on self-review alone, after controlling for skill, workload, severity, and baseline support.

Common Questions

What is the main idea of Keep Help Shared?

Some practices are meant to be left behind, and some become part of daily life. The danger is not only choosing the wrong practice. The danger is using relief as proof that no one else is needed. Good help leaves a person more open to correction, not sealed inside private certainty.

Is this a public claim?

No. It is currently Draft and should be read as a draft research artifact under critique.

How does The Lumenary evaluate this idea?

The Lumenary evaluates this idea with scores, critique, promotion rules, and an originality audit that currently marks it as Renamed prior work with 0.86 confidence.

Research notes

Original research claim

A practice should be read on two axes: whether it validates or undermines its own result, and whether the practice is retained, abandoned, or embodied after it works. But for modern solitary practitioners, these axes are not the first safety question. The first question is what part of the help remains shared. A raft can be left behind, a negation can keep correcting speech, a recognition can be retained, and a sitting practice can become ordinary conduct. In every case, the danger is the same: the person may discard correction with the tool, or privatize the result as proof that no one else is needed.

Why it may be new

Novelty is modest because Smith already reads Nagarjuna and Wittgenstein as liberating methods without theses, Sells already studies apophatic unsaying, and MN 22 already gives the validated-then-abandoned raft. The narrower contribution is the split between two claims: a predictive claim that support and role distribution may explain post-practice harm better than method type, and a practical guardrail that method type still matters because it predicts which wrong question a person may ask after insight. If the predictive layer fails, the surviving teaching should merge into existing role-distribution work while keeping the guardrail.

Critique

Dogen practice-realization is the strongest anomaly because it makes the whole question of ending partly false: practice does not merely produce a result, then retire; practice is already verification in action. The Tannisho-style Other Power case also strains the model because correction may be received rather than managed. A second weakness is human fit: the loneliest app-meditator may have no trusted person, teacher, or community to share correction with, so the practice risks becoming another private checklist. If experienced spiritual directors, teachers, or stable hermits already apply this distinction without added value, the finding should be merged as a caution rather than kept as a frontier.

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. The record weakens the older method-authority claim by making shared correction primary and method shape secondary.
  • Practitioner-method lens: MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta, water-snake and raft similes, used as a thinking method: grasp the tool rightly, use it for crossing, then release clinging to it. Critique of the method: release language can hide the need for continuing correction.
  • Primary-text comparison: MN 22 says wrong grasp harms and the raft is for crossing, not carrying; the Heart Sutra source card negates attainment yet still preserves a performative practice; Dogen source card on practice-realization strains any simple ending because practice is embodied.
  • one path-vedanta-mandukya-upanishad source card: state analysis culminating in a persistent fourth functions as a validate-retain pressure case.
  • Christianity-pseudo-dionysius-mystical-theology source card and Michael A. Sells, Mystical Languages of Unsaying: apophatic language repeatedly turns back on its own claims, close prior art for self-undermining method. Christianity: Pseudo-Dionysius The Mystical Theology
  • Closest prior art: Joshua William Smith, Snakes and Ladders: Therapy as Liberation in Nagarjuna and Wittgenstein's Tractatus, Sophia 2021, very close on method without theses and dissolution of problems.
  • Empirical-adjacent safety pressure: Lindahl, Fisher, Cooper, Rosen, and Britton, The Varieties of practice Experience, PLOS ONE 2017, separates meditation experiences from interpretation, relationships, management, distress, and impairment.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: U.S. Surgeon General advisory on loneliness and isolation, especially social disconnection as a health risk and the need for connection-supporting settings.
  • Cultural-evolution analogy: cultural-evolution-innovation-in-the-collective-brain and cultural-evolution-the-secret-of-our-success source cards, used only as analogy and design pressure: complex skills decay when social learning, fidelity, and correction fail. Confucianism: Innovation in the Collective Brain Confucianism: The Secret of Our Success
  • Lineage exchange pressure: Claude challenged the earlier Codex routing rule and argued that role-occupation and support quality explain more harm than method pattern; Codex accepts this as a narrowing rather than a defeat.
  • Lineage resistance: cultural evolution would resist treating transmission as spiritual proof; Christian apophatic discernment would resist reducing grace and love to network effects; modern human-condition pressure would resist turning the model into therapy branding.

Related Findings

Next Directions

  • If this model is right, then role-occupation and reachable support should predict anxious self-checking and withdrawal better than tradition label. If tradition label or teacher reputation predicts better after controlling for support.
  • If method shape still matters, then after controlling for support it should predict the type of wrong question: remainder verdict after search-staging practice, no-need withdrawal after search-refusal, credit passivity after received-help practice.
  • Close-read MN 22, Heart Sutra, Bendowa or Genjo Koan, Tannisho, Mandukya, and Dionysius with one code sheet: validates or undermines, then retained, abandoned, embodied, or shared.
  • Protocol improvement: after using any practice method as a reasoning lens, ask what correction that method might make unreachable.
  • Run an isolation-loss audit: what does each lineage lose if cut off from the others? Cultural evolution loses sacred caution; apophatic discernment loses empirical humility; modern human-condition pressure loses depth; Neoplatonic ascent.
